The Great Wall of ChinaThe Great Wall of China is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and is a series of walls that stretches for more than 6500km. It is the longest and heaviest man made structure till date. The wall was first built by the Ming Dynasty in between the 200 and 220 BC and was rebuilt and maintained between 5th century and 16th century BC.

 

The Great Wall stretches from Shanhaiguan to the southern edge of Mongolia. The wall was used extensively by the Ming dynasty to deploy army personnel along the kingdom’s border. The watch towers that were built on hill tops and other high elevated spots acted as a communication points for the soldiers.

 

The Great Wall of China is one of the manmade structures that is believed to be visible from space under suitable conditions. It has been one of the most preferred tourist spots which was visited in the past century and receives more than a million visitors each year.

 

The wall itself was built by 4 different empires at different times. Being a long structure that stretches across the country, the wall can be accessed easily from the many cities lining it of which Beijing is the closest and most preferred. A smart option while visiting this wall is to carry a good number of water bottles and a practical map.

 

Some of the notable areas along the Great Wall are the North pass of Juyongguan and the Number one Pass under Heaven. The steepest watch tower is located in the Ming Section which stands at over 3200 feet above sea level.

 

The temperature and weather is relatively hot during summer and cold in winters with occasional rains all through the year. Being one of the 7 Wonders of the World and a world class structure, the Great Wall of China is one of the most visited tourist spots in the World.
