Grand Canyon
During the pre-historic times, The Canyon was occupied by tribes and the site was considered as a holy site to which pilgrimage was undertaken. The Canyon remained hugely unexplored until the end of the U.S Civil war in 19th century. It was in the mid 16th century that The Canyon had its first foreign explorer visiting The Canyon walls.
Geographically The Canyon is situated in the state of Arizona and is roughly about 475kms long with the maximum depth being more than 1 km. The Canyon experienced a volcanic activity about 1 million years ago and the lava and ash were deposited in the Colorado River.
The Canyon has variable weather along its length. Parts of the north rim that are higher get snowfall in winter with temperatures varying a lot all through the year. The temperature soars to about 38 °C and the winter drops up to -17 °C.
Some of the places to visit in The Canyon include the Lipan Point that is located in the South Rim, the Sky Walk that is situated at about 3000 feet from ground known as the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Also the canyon is often used as trekking spots. Trekking can be tiresome and rough but it is rewarding. Other places include the desert view watch tower, Lookout Studio and Hopi House.
The canyon can be easily accessed by road. Also there are helicopters that serve as tourist flights which can be boarded at Las Vegas and Phoenix. There is also a scenic train that runs from Williams and reaches Grand Canyon station. With some breathtaking landscape and views the Grand Canyon is one of the most preferred tourist spots in the world.
